Sonya Welch.

Sonya Welch was born in Manhattan but spent most of her childhood in Augusta and much of her adulthood in South Florida. She has been writing since the age of twelve, beginning with poetry and short stories before discovering her passion for playwriting. Witnessing the decline of live theater in her community, Sonya took action by founding The W Theater Ensemble in 2012.

The company was established to provide local actors, singers, and musicians with opportunities to perform in professionally produced theater productions. Since its inception, The W Theater has successfully produced more than fifty stage plays throughout Florida and the Metropolitan Atlanta area. Some of its notable productions include Secrets, Lies & Deception, Broken, But Not Forgotten, The 1 Thing I Wish She Knew, Church Women, and My Shattered Soul.

Sonya earned her certification in Television Production from William T. McFatter Technical College and later studied theater at Broward College. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Theater from Florida International University.

In February 2020, Sonya and The W Theater relocated to Atlanta, where she continues to produce stage plays and develop film projects, including her short film series Call Me Zaddy and her upcoming feature film, Cloud Nine.
